This is the latest painting that we have seen by Fairley & it was executed in his 96th year. The handling of the paint is very tentative, with thin glazes of colour overlapping each other causing a blurring of the outlines. The total effect is emotionally compelling from a distance. The pastel tones are, to say the least, unusual for Fairley & remarkably beautiful.

The second illustration above presents the 1981 landscape with ERODED HILLSIDE, CORYGELLS of 1939 [ catalogued as # 3 above ] which makes a striking statement to the consistency & integrity of Fairley's personal style & vision over more than 40 years.
